Description
PORTUGAL & COLONIES – Couple Thousand Different, Portugal and Colonial Possessions – While nowadays Portugal is associated with holiday makers, good retirement options for expats, and record high waves appreciated by competitive surfers, Portugal was the first transcontinental colonial empire, and this collection of a couple thousand different mint and used stamps is a good testament to it. The collection runs from the very dawn of philately into the last quarter of the 20th century, presented in a Minkus album. Though Portugal proper accounts for only roughly one-third, it includes a densely populated solid early period portion boasting noteworthy standouts like mint #34, 44e, 83, 88, 89, 90, 91, 102, 104, 346-376, 422-436, 437-452, 487, 595-602, 694-701, 731-734, used #6, 12-16, 19, 23, 24, 32, 35, 38, 39, 42, 43, 50a, 52-56, 74a, 76, 77, 85, among others, running into the 1970s.
However, the bulk of this massive Minkus album is allocated to Portuguese colonial possessions running in alphabetical order from Azores to Timor, covering the same period as the main Portuguese portion and solidly populated throughout. This makes the lot equally attractive to the collector looking to acquire comprehensive Portugal and Colonies coverage in a single album and to the dealer or accumulator seeking organized material across multiple Portuguese territories with strong catalog backing. Condition throughout is generally Very Fine, mint original gum, some never hinged. Note that only a sample selection of key sections has been photographed as a preview into this humongous collection.
