Description
This 45-pound lot is packed with United Nations material, first day covers, and souvenir pages, with enough variety and depth to satisfy collectors and accumulators across several different areas. The UN material alone is substantial, with 200 to 300 folders containing mint UN stamps, many of them priced - suggesting a good portion of this lot came directly from a dealer's stock. Approximately 200 US souvenir pages add further value, and roughly 12 pounds of US, foreign, and UN first day covers bring the total cover count to at least 1,000.
The highlights are worth calling out individually. About 30 Famous Americans first day covers of Scott 611 are included, all uncacheted and addressed. A cover bearing Scott 649-650 with a green cancel from the Civil Aeronautics Conference is a genuinely interesting find. Duplication runs heavy on some items, which makes this lot particularly practical for dealers or accumulators looking to stock up on specific material.
The most unusual items in the lot are five licenses and IDs issued by the US Department of Commerce Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation, printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing for a seaman named Alan Nightingale of Plymouth, Massachusetts. It is the kind of unexpected historical material that turns a good lot into a memorable one. Several additional items are included throughout that reward a careful look.
